Doing Business in China : Insights of an expert

ISC Paris Business School invited Christian Schmidkonz, professor at ISC Paris’ partner Munich Business School, as guest lecturer in Sabine Bacouel-Jentjens’ lectures on Intercultural Management and Doing Business in Emerging Markets.

Professor Schmidkonz studied Economics and also Chinese language. From 1998 until 2001, he was employed at the German ifo Institute for Economic Research where he worked in the research and consultancy on Chinese issues, and subsequently acted as Senior Consultant with Capgemini in the telecommunications and internet industry. Since 2005, he has been a partner of THINK!DESK China Research & Consulting

Students gained valuable insight into China’s business culture and social etiquette to avoid misunderstandings that could harm deals and working relationships. Students learnt about the complicated system of “guanxi” and how to earn, give or destroy “face” of a business partner and the resulting consequences. Furthermore, companies looking to tap China also need to show a long-term approach as success in China takes time and requires patience and costs a lot of resources.
