What does a Buyer do?

As the name suggests, a buyer is responsible for purchasing products or services on behalf of a company.

Just as an individual negotiates the best deals and looks for the best value for money, so does a company. It seeks to optimize its costs while ensuring the quality of its products and services. And who is entrusted with this role? The buyer.

The purchaser is responsible for:

  • Finding the best deal;
  • Negotiating the best price;
  • Managing delivery or implementation deadlines.

Purchasers mainly work in SMEs, mid-sized companies and large groups. However, they may also work on behalf of a public sector organisation as a ‘public purchaser’.

How to become a Buyer?

The purchasing profession is accessible to those with a bac+3 or bac+5 degree in business, management or logistics, whether from a business school, engineering school or university. Fluency in English is also a highly valued asset for recruiters.

There are many ways to enter the profession. In general, a young graduate starts out as an assistant purchaser.

Bachelor’s degree programs

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Development
  • Bachelor’s degree in International Business (taught entirely in English)
  • Professional bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Distribution
  • Professional bachelor’s degree in Commercial Negotiation

Master’s degree programs

Several master’s degrees provide access to the purchasing profession, including the Master’s degree in International Purchasing Management and the Master’s degree in International Business & Management (taught in English).

Masters of Science (MSc) programs are also worth considering, particularly for their strong professional focus. ISC Paris, for example, offers an MSc in Supply Chain Management, taught in English in Paris or in a bilingual French/English program in Orléans.

This program has the advantage of being offered as a full-time or work-study program, ideal for gaining professional experience that is recognized in France and internationally.

The main tasks of a Buyer

1) Purchasing skills: a good buyer masters all aspects of purchasing. They have a thorough understanding of the regulations in force and purchasing procedures, down to the smallest detail. They also ensure that contractual constraints are respected.

2) Mastery of negotiation techniques: Negotiation is an integral part of their daily work. They are comfortable with figures, know how to analyse the market, assess the supplier’s position and adapt their strategy to obtain the best terms.

3) Budget management skills: the profitability of the company depends largely on its purchasing. The buyer manages a precisely defined budget. Thanks to their knowledge of market prices and their rigour, they know how to identify the most advantageous and consistent offers in relation to their economic constraints.

What skills do you need to be a Buyer?

  • The buyer has a highly analytical mind and strong synthesis skills.
  • He is rigorous and organised, not to mention that he knows how to make decisions and stand by them with conviction.
  • Unsurprisingly, negotiation comes naturally to him. Beyond the technical aspects, he has a real appetite for everything related to negotiation in order to be persuasive and convincing.
  • In terms of interpersonal skills, they are excellent communicators. They maintain healthy relationships with both internal teams and suppliers.
  • Finally, they know how to keep their cool, even under intense pressure.

What are the career opportunities for a buyer?

There are many career paths open to buyers. In particular, they can progress to management positions. Here are a few examples of possible career paths:

HOW MUCH DOES A BUYER EARN?
What is the salary of a junior buyer?
The salary of a buyer at the start of their career is between €33,000 and €40,000 gross per year. This corresponds to €2,750 to €3,330 gross per month, or approximately €2,200 to €2,500 net per month.
In addition to this fixed salary, there is usually a variable component, averaging €4,000 per year, in the form of performance bonuses or a 13th month’s salary.
The remuneration of a junior buyer is therefore generally attractive and higher than that of many other junior positions in the commercial sector.
This is mainly due to the scarcity of positions open to young graduates without experience. Most start in roles such as purchasing assistant, which offer lower salaries.
It should be noted that the salaries of buyers based in Paris are up to 20% higher than those offered in other regions.
HOW MUCH DOES A BUYER EARN?
What is the salary of a senior buyer?
A buyer with more than five years’ experience earns on average between €45,000 and €57,000 gross per year, or €3,750 to €4,750 gross per month. This equates to approximately €2,900 to €3,700 net per month.
The variable portion of their remuneration can reach €7,000 per year. This most often corresponds to bonuses for achieving targets or performance, or a 13th and 14th month’s salary.
The more experience the buyer has, the higher the remuneration they can negotiate. Large SMEs and international groups offer the most competitive salaries.
It should be noted that remuneration is directly linked to the budgets that the buyer manages. And for good reason: the higher the amounts, the greater the responsibilities and the higher the salary.
