What does a Category Manager do?

In retail chains, category managers develop the turnover generated by a range of products using category management techniques. This includes:

The best training programmes for becoming a category manager are business school courses. Entry-level positions require a two- or three-year degree or a five-year degree in administration, commerce, marketing or management.

After completing their secondary education, students can enrol in a two-year BTS MCO (Operational Commercial Management) programme or a three-year Bachelor’s degree in Business Development.

The salary of a category manager with 1 to 4 years of experience ranges from €30,000 to €40,000 gross per year. Their monthly income is €2,500 to €3,300 gross, or €1,950 to €2,550 net.
A variable component (performance bonuses, target bonuses, 13th month bonus, etc.) is also added to this remuneration, for an average amount of €4,000 per year.
