- As an employee of a real estate agency
Real estate agents can work in an agency as employees. This provides them with a suitable professional environment, access to a large network of buyers or tenants, and well-stocked databases of properties for sale or rent in the area.
There are two types of agencies:
A network of estate agencies: companies such as Orpi, LaForêt, Century 21 and Guy Hoquet operate extensive networks of agencies, sometimes with more than 8,000 experts spread across several regions, either on permanent contracts or as independent contractors.
Traditional estate agency: often small businesses (micro-enterprises) with fewer than 20 employees, located in a specific geographical area.
Many estate agents choose to work as freelancers, dealing directly with their own clients. They may work with private individuals or professionals (companies, developers, estate agency networks, etc.). Freelancing is popular for the freedom it offers, but requires good management of your client portfolio.
- Running your own business
After several years of experience, some estate agents decide to set up and manage their own agency. They then lead a team of real estate experts.
Note: Depending on their professional status, estate agents may be paid on commission, a fixed salary, or a combination of a fixed salary (monthly and generally modest) and variable pay (sales commissions and performance bonuses).
