What does a Key Account Manager do?

The account manager is responsible for managing a company’s client portfolio, particularly major clients. Their role consists of three main tasks:

  • Managing client needs;
  • Strengthening client loyalty to the company;

1) A commercial mindset above all else: the key account manager is first and foremost an excellent salesperson. They know and master all the fundamental sales techniques, whether it be prospecting, negotiating or drafting commercial offers.

What is the salary of a junior key account manager?
The salary for a junior key account manager ranges from €30,000 to €35,000 gross per year, or between €2,500 and €2,900 gross per month. This equates to a net monthly salary of €1,900 to €2,200.
Even at the start of their career, these professionals are eligible for additional remuneration (performance bonuses, 13th month, etc.) averaging €2,500 per year.
Junior candidates find it difficult to negotiate their remuneration. However, demonstrating initial experience in the field (e.g. through a work-study programme) may enable them to apply for jobs offering salaries at the upper end of the national average.
It should also be noted that salaries offered by companies based in the Paris region can be up to 20% higher than those offered by organisations located in other regions of France.

In addition, they receive additional remuneration averaging €5,000 per year. This includes bonuses for achieving targets and performance, as well as a 13th and 14th month’s salary.
Large companies mainly recruit experienced candidates. The more expertise they have gained from several years of experience, the higher their remuneration.
The salaries offered by international companies and large groups are generally the highest on the market. However, here too, average salaries in Paris and its suburbs are higher than elsewhere in the country.
