What does a SEO Consultant do?

An SEO consultant is a specialist in search engine optimisation, particularly on Google.

Their role is to boost a website’s pages up the search rankings without resorting to paid advertising. This is precisely what is known as ‘SEOSearch Engine Optimisation.

Their ultimate goal is to increase traffic to their client’s website, in order to generate more leads.

To achieve this, they put themselves in the shoes of both the target user and the search engine algorithms. The SEO consultant often works as part of a team with marketing managers, web editors or developers.

  • On the one hand, they select the right keywords to rank each page for relevant user queries;
  • On the other, they ensure that the website and all its pages meet the technical criteria of search engines: structure, content quality, loading speed, etc.

They may work as a freelancer or as a salaried employee within a specialist agency or directly within a company’s marketing team.

How to become an SEO consultant?

There is no specific qualification required to become an SEO expert. Some courses, usually online, teach the basics of the role, but you should be wary of their quality.

Bachelor’s degree programs:

The most common route to becoming an SEO consultant is to obtain a two-year or three-year degree in marketing, communication or IT. Work-study programs are also recommended, as they allow you to gain professional experience to enhance your CV.

To become an SEO consultant, ISC Paris offers a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Digital Communication. This program is available at the Paris and Orléans campuses. It has the advantage of being offered in both French and English, either as a standard degree or as a work-study program from the third year onwards. It is a vocational training program leading to a qualification recognised in France and abroad.

Master’s degree programs:

If a student comes from a different background and already holds a two-year or three-year degree, they can pursue a Master’s in Digital Marketing and Communication to specialise in SEO.

It is also possible to further develop one’s skills by continuing one’s studies with a Master’s in Consulting and Project Management, or a Master of Science, such as the MSc in Responsible Marketing and Communication.

What are the career opportunities for an SEO Consultant?

Although, at first glance, career progression opportunities may seem limited, the opposite is true. The role of SEO consultant acts as a springboard to a wide range of positions within marketing. Here are a few examples:

HOW MUCH DOES AN SEO CONSULTANT?
What is the salary of a junior SEO consultant?
The salary of a junior SEO consultant ranges from €25,000 to €35,000 gross per year. This means they earn on average between €2,100 and €2,900 gross per month, or approximately €1,600 to €2,200 net per month.
On top of this, there are sometimes performance bonuses and a 13th month’s salary, which amount to around €2,000 gross per year.
At the start of their career, if they choose to work as a freelance consultant, their income may be less than €25,000 gross per year. It all depends on the number of clients and the fee charged for each assignment.
This is why, for greater financial stability, junior SEO consultants generally choose to gain their experience within a company or a specialist agency. Their salary then varies depending on the size of the organisation and its location.
And for good reason: SMEs based in Paris and certain major cities such as Lyon or Nice can offer salaries up to 20% higher than in other regions of France.
HOW MUCH DOES AN SEO CONSULTANT?
What is the salary of a senior SEO consultant?
According to Glassdoor, the salary of a senior SEO consultant with over five years’ experience ranges from €40,000 to €55,000 gross per year. Their monthly earnings therefore range from €3,300 to €4,500 gross, or approximately €2,550 to €3,500 net per month.
On top of this, there may be a variable component consisting of performance bonuses as well as a 13th and 14th month’s salary, amounting to an average of around €4,000 gross per year.
In-house, senior SEO consultants may reach a salary cap and must therefore move into another role to increase their pay, such as becoming a marketing manager.
Conversely, a freelance consultant has no limit on their earnings. Some senior experts can earn over €65,000 gross per year, depending on their client portfolio and their average daily rate (ADR).
